Join the Winnetka Park District and the Northwest Passage for a guided kayaking adventure in the Skokie Lagoons! No prior experience is necessary as these kayaking adventures are informal and fun. Skokie Lagoons Habitat Restoration Project - R30573

Join the Winnetka Park District BackYard Nature Center, and the Cook County Forest Preserve steward for a morning of service and habitat restoration in the Skokie Lagoons! Fourth graders and older will have the opportunity to use saws and loppers to remove invasive buckthorn trees, and younger children can beautify the lagoons by collecting trash with their parents.

Afterwards, participants are welcome to bring s'mores, hot dogs or other food for roasting over the brush pile fire. All necessary tools and gloves will be provided, Participants will meet along Forestway Drive north of Tower Road under the BackYard Nature Center banner.

Please note: All minors must have a parent present to sign a Cook County Forest Preserve waiver from.

Kayak + SUP Camp - R30579

DATES: August 13 - August 17
LOCATION: Lloyd Beach (799 Sheridan Road) & Skokie Lagoons

Campers will find adventure out on the water learning to kayak and stand up paddleboard in Lake Michigan and the Skokie Lagoons! Staff from The Northwest Passage will combine structured lessons and games with water and vessel safety to create an educational and exciting environment. Instructors will share their knowledge of wind, wave and weather conditions to further camper’s safety and confidence on the water.

Each day will start with games to get campers warmed up. Next, participants will learn essential gear and safety rules. Finally, everyone will head into the water with their kayaks or SUPs to apply the day’s lesson. Camp meets at the Skokie Lagoons on Thursday. Other camp days take place at Lloyd Beach. Transportation to and from Skokie Lagoons is not provided.

Camp requirements: Campers must be able to swim 50 feet. Each camper will be required to wear a personal flotation device at all times while in the water.

AGES: All
LOCATION: Elder Lane Beach
(299 Sheridan Road)

This field trip with Dr. Charles Shabica of Shabica & Associates includes a three hour
program where families will set out on a science exploration to collect, analyze, and learn about items found on the beach. Participants will be divided into groups of four to eight to discover:

»» What sand is, where it comes from, and how it’s formed
»» Where rocks come from, how they got on the beach, and how to identify granite and volcanic basalt that formed 400 million years ago
»» What types of plants and animals live on the beach, and which are native and invasive
»» How to identify evidence of glaciers from the past
»» How humans impact the beach through littering

All children should be accompanied by an adult.
